Financial Aid for Summer

Financial Aid for Summer

Summary:

Overview of financial aid eligibility, application process, and disbursement dates for the summer semester

Eligibility for Summer Aid

Overview

In general, if you take fewer than 12 credits in the previous fall and/or spring semesters, you may be eligible to use your unused financial aid funds during the summer semester. However, there are many factors involved in determining your eligibility for financial aid in the summer. Therefore, students seeking to discuss their summer aid eligibility should speak with the Financial Aid Office directly by visiting them in the K. Ray Bailey Student Services Building. Distance students may contact the Financial Aid Office by email at financialaidoffice@abtech.edu.

Pell Grant

If you took 12 or more credits in both the fall and spring semesters and received Pell Grant funds for both semesters, you will not have any Pell Grant funds remaining for the summer term.

Loans

If you have remaining eligibility for a Direct Loan after the fall and/or spring semesters, you can request a Direct Loan for the summer semester. As in the fall and spring semesters, you must attend at least six credit hours to receive any Direct Loan funds in the summer.

To determine if you have remaining loan funds for the summer, visit the Financial Aid Office in the K. Ray Bailey Student Services Building. Distance students may contact the Financial Aid Office by email at financialaidoffice@abtech.edu.

State Grants

This type of financial aid is awarded by the state, such as the North Carolina Community College Grant (NCCCG) and North Carolina Educational Lottery Scholarship (NCELS), is not available during summer semesters.

Applying for Summer Aid

Pell Grants

The process for receiving a federal Pell Grant award in the summer is the same as in the fall and spring semesters. To receive Pell Grant funds in the summer, you need to complete a FAFSA at fafsa.gov, for the correct academic year (the same as the previous fall and spring), and complete any additional verification steps the Financial Aid Office has requested that you complete.

If you have already completed a FAFSA and any necessary financial aid verification steps, you do not need to take any additional steps to receive any summer Pell Grant funds for which you are eligible; your summer award will be automatically applied to your account.

Loans

To apply for any summer loan funds for which you may be eligible, you must have completed a Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling during the academic year. After completing those steps, and after you have been awarded a loan for the academic year, you do not need to complete any other steps unless you would like to decline or reduce the amount of the loan. If you do, submit a Direct Loan Decline or Reduce Form for the correct academic year, which can be obtained from the Financial Aid Forms & Resources page

Receiving Summer Aid

Notifications

If and when your summer aid is awarded, you will receive an email notification to your A-B Tech student email account. You'll also be able to see your award amount in WebAdvisor, under Curriculum Students then Financial Aid Status by Term.

Paying for Tuition

If you have a financial aid award in place for summer, you are making Satisfactory Academic Progress, and you have not received any additional email notifications about being ineligible to receive financial aid, you do not need to take any steps to pay for your classes before the summer tuition payment deadline. Your financial aid will be automatically disbursed and applied to your account balance after your attendance has been recorded in your classes.

Disbursements & Refunds

The specific date(s) your financial aid is disbursed depends on your summer class schedule, number of credit hours, and other factors. For additional details about refund disbursements and when your summer aid is likely to be disbursed, click here, email financialaidoffice@abtech.edu, or visit the Financial Aid Office in the K. Ray Bailey Student Services Building.

Summer Priority Deadline

In order to ensure that your summer aid is in place before the tuition payment deadline for summer, you must complete all necessary verification steps, submit any requested financial aid documents, and complete any necessary loan application steps by the priority deadline. This will be posted on the Financial Aid Dates and Deadlines page.

If you do not complete all necessary verification/application steps by this priority deadline, the Financial Aid Office cannot guarantee that your summer aid will be in place by the summer tuition payment deadline. In that case, you will at least need to set up a payment plan in order to hold your seat in your summer classes. If setting up a payment plan, it's highly recommended that you first speak with a Financial Aid representative to ensure you'll be eligible for summer aid.
