An overview of placement testing requirements, waiving a placement test, placement test preparation, and re-testing
The purpose of placement is to be sure you're ready for the curriculum. Please see the Placement Overview on our website, at abtech.edu/placement, for placement requirements and the options for completing placement.
If you're applying for any degree or diploma program, you are required to complete placement. If you are unclassified (not wanting to enroll in a program), you will need to complete placement if you want to take a math or English course or any course for which math or English are prerequisites.
The EdReady test is one of several placement options. EdReady is NOT a timed test. It typically takes around two–four hours to complete the entire test. You will need to bring a photo ID with you when you take the placement test. Students are not permitted to bring their own calculators to the test. The test is administered through a computer, and a calculator will appear on the screen during the portions of the math section when it is allowed. Scratch paper and pencils are also provided. The Testing Center is located in the Simpson Building (#1 on our campus map).
EdReady scores are valid for five years.
It's important to prepare before taking the placement test. Study guides are available at abtech.edu/placement. The sample questions are helpful in understanding test formats.
Instructions for scheduling an appointment to take the EdReady are available in a separate article.
Placement testing is also available at A-B Tech's Madison Site. You must contact the site directly to schedule. Contact Sherri Davis at (828) 398-7701 or sherrijdavis@abtech.edu
To cancel a placement test, follow the link in the confirmation email that you received after registering for the placement test. You can also cancel a placement test by calling (828) 398-7219.
We accept scores from alternate placement tests. You can complete placement by submitting acceptable SAT, ACT, Asset, or Compass test scores earned within the last five years. A-B Tech does not administer or facilitate any SAT or ACT testing on campus.
Transfer credit will also be accepted instead of placement testing. You must submit an official transcript.
Information about retaking the placement test is available in a separate article.
If you place into Adult Basic Education reading, you must complete that before you can enroll in college courses. If you test into both Adult Basic Education language and math, you must also complete that before enrolling in college courses. If you place into Adult Basic Education math only or Adult Basic Education language only, you will be allowed to take Developmental Studies and/or curriculum classes with approval of your academic advisor.
