Your first step in applying for any type of grant is to complete a FAFSA at studentaid.gov.

Federal Pell Grant

A federal Pell Grant is a grant for undergraduates from the government that does not have to be repaid if you complete your classes successfully. The specific amount you are awarded is based on a number of factors, including cost of attendance, enrollment status, and financial need.

If you've already earned a bachelor's or graduate degree, you won't be eligible to receive Pell Grants or state grants, but you may be eligible to receive Direct Loans or Federal Work-Study funds.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is a grant from the government for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need who are enrolled at least half-time. Priority is given to students who apply by March 1 for the following academic year.

North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship (NCELS)

The North Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship is available for students who:

  1. Are North Carolina residents for tuition purposes
  2. Meet all eligibility requirements for a Federal Pell Grant, except the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) requirement
  3. Are enrolled in at least six credit hours per semester as an undergraduate student in a degree, certificate or diploma program at an eligible North Carolina post-secondary institution
  4. Have NOT already earned a baccalaureate (four-year) college degree
  5. Are meeting the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements
