How to begin repayment of federal student loans and when repayment is due

When Repayment is Due
You don't have to begin repaying most federal student loans until six months after you stop attending college or drop below half-time enrollment (six credit hours). This includes Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans, and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans. Repayment for any "PLUS" loans is due once your loan is fully disbursed. For additional details about repaying PLUS loans, go to studentaid.ed.gov/types/loans/plus.
Your loan servicer must provide you with a loan repayment schedule that states when your first payment is due, the number and frequency of payments, and the amount of each payment.
For most loans, interest will accrue during your grace period.
When the Six-Month "Grace Period" Can Change
The six month period after you stop attending college or drop below half-time enrollment status is called a "grace period." The following circumstances may change your grace period:
Returning to school before the end of your loan's grace period — If you reenroll in school at least half-time before the end of your grace period, you'll receive the full six month grace period when you stop attending school or drop below half-time enrollment.
Active duty military — If you're called to active military duty for more than 30 days before the end of your grace period, you'll receive the full six month grace period when you return from active duty.
Loan consolidation — If you consolidate your loans during your grace period, you'll give up the remainder of your grace period and begin repayment after your Direct Consolidation Loan is disbursed. Your first bill will be due approximately two months after the Direct Consolidation Loan is disbursed.
