How and where to take the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) Test

The TABE test (Test of Adult Basic Education) is an adult basic skills assessment. The reading comprehension section of the test is required for application to certain programs. The TABE test is also required for students with low NC-DAP/Accuplacer scores.

TABE Testing for Program Application

The TABE test is required for some curriculum (for college credit) and Continuing Education (not for college credit) programs, including Nurse Aide I, the Fire Academy, Basic Law Enforcement Training, Highway Patrol, and Continuing Education EMS training.

The test is given in the Department of Transitional Studies (DOTS). Please go to the Hemlock Building, Room 322.

Hemlock Testing Center Hours

Testing hours for students applying for NA I, the Fire Academy, EMT Basic, and Highway Patrol are below. You should arrive at least one hour before closing so you have time to complete the placement test.

  • Tuesday 9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon
  • Thursday 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
  • Friday 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

For more information, please call (828) 398-7433 or stop by the Department of Transitional Studies on the third floor of the Hemlock Building. Out-of-state applicants should check with a local community college to see if they administer the test.

TABE Testing for Students with Low NC-DAP/Accuplacer Scores

Students whose NC-DAP/Accuplacer scores do not meet minimum requirements are referred to the Testing Center in the Simpson Building to take the TABE.

If you did not pass the NC-DAP/Accuplacer test, you can schedule a TABE Test at abtech.edu/placement. Click the link under "Schedule Placement Testing" and sign in using the username and password you have for WebAdvisor/Moodle. The Testing Center will also accept students on a walk-in basis if space allows. The hours are Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m.–8:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. The test can take up to an hour to complete, so you should arrive at least an hour before the lab closes.
